Traded for a bagged 2001 Golf. Took this pic in a Dairy Queen parking lot after a cooling fitting burst, it puked out half the coolant, and I discovered the hood release latch was slightly broken. I burned the shit out of my thumb and got Subway for dinner while I waited for my tow . Subway is worse than I remember.

And I got a cat, meet Rita.

I’m sure the Miata, properly set up, would have been great at autocross or on a track. I don’t have a desire to do either of those things, though. I like driving slow VWs, and this will be a better slow VW than the Miata would have been.

By definition! In fact it seems to have excelled at being as slow as possible today.

I’m also one of those people who just wants to drive my car stock. I’ve never felt any urge to modify a car or get one that needs modifying. I just drive on normal streets.

Yeah, I guess stock the stock 19 year old plastics don’t like the pressure they see when one does a pull... oh well, a new fitting is like $2.

This is the first time I’ll have a car with air ride. I like it for how much I’ve driven it so far. I’m kind of uneasy about a 215 tire on a 9.5" wheel. Not a fan of that much stretch.

I’m not a huge fan. I think they’re going to go pretty quick. They’re just JNCs, and they’ve got a 215 section tire stretched on a 9.5" tire, which isn’t CRAZY, but stretching is kind of sketchy.

It’s pretty solid to start with. It needs a cooling hose fitting, side markers, rub strips, a fan switch, some attention to the interior, and some finer sanding done to the paint. It’s a 20 footer right now. Can probably get it down to a six of less footer.

I had a S ubway breakfast sandwich once. Just the once. Precooked omelette thing out of a plastic tub, microwaved, and thrown o n flat bread. I’ll pass. The sub bread is the best part about Subway to me, and how hard would it be to fry up some scrambled eggs upon request? I had high hopes when they were announced but was seriously disappointed.

S3 8L wheels that are 7.5" with 225/45/17 tires is what i have on my A3 8L (sister of the Golf) and it’s the maximum you can have without rolling the fenders or removing the fender liners.

It’s Air Lift v2 management, slam series bags. I crawled under and it all looked decent. Water sepa rator worked. The controller was a janky homebrew setup, but works fine. Any bag-specific knowledge I should know? I’ve never owned anything on air ride.

Get an emergency kit going: couple sections of line, fittings, wrenches, teflon tape, schrader to ptc fittings. It’s the fire extinguisher theory: better to have and not need. Pressure based can be a bit funky since it’s at best an approximation of height, draining the tank depends on where you live and humidity for frequency.

I’m probably going to just set it and forget it, but that kind of defeats the purpose of bags. If I don’t like them or they start presenting issues, I’m not opposed to taking them off and replacing with a set of racelands.

The funky thing with pressure is that if you increase load (say add a passenger or two) that will increase the spring pressure and the system will actually lower to reduce to the set point. So you end up with presets for how many people are in the car. Pressure is really just a way to correlate spring force.

And the emergency kit is really only necessary for new installs, or if the previous owner did a hack job. We’ve had shop cars go years without issues when installed well.

Nice find! I hope it’ll be reliable, even though it seems a bit outside-the-box. The suspension is interesting . Do you plan on modifying it more? I hope it gives you years of fun and love. It’s about how much care you put in it, as well.

No mods planned, just going to maintain her and hopefully there won’t be very many age related issues for a long time.
